To provide a loving atmosphere where people and cities are transformed by the presence of God.
When we close our eyes and try to imagine the church God intends for us to be, we see a big church in the heart of Marin County, full of life and full of people.
It's a place where the ongoing and ever-increasing experience of God's presence is prized above all else - a place where Jesus is so adored it becomes like a fragrance, filling the world around us. It's a place that feels like home to the one who is near to God and to the one who is far off - a place where people are honored, regardless of station or status. It's a place abounding in hope and joy, where people find freedom to live the abundant life Jesus promised. It's a place full of servant-hearted people who do everything with excellence - building the kingdom and blessing our city. And finally, it's a place of generosity and prosperity - a place that stands for the rights of the poor - a place whose gaze is always to the horizon, eagerly reaching out to fulfill the great commission of our King and Savior, Jesus Christ.
We believe in the Trinity of God, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. God is three in one, as expressed by the Nicene Creed and Creed of Chalcedon.
We believe in the Lordship of Jesus Christ, who alone is the Savior.
We believe the Bible is the inspired word of God. It is infallible. It is inerrant in the original. It is the final authority for the Christian faith and practice.
We believe in the incarnation of God as man in Jesus Christ (the Word became flesh).
We believe that the way of salvation is both repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
We believe in the power of the Holy Spirit, His dwelling presence in every believer and the gifts that He imparts.
We believe the church, the body of Christ on earth, is composed of all who place their hope of salvation and forgiveness of sins in Jesus Christ. It is the central agency by which God accomplishes His work in the world. It is both universal (all believers) and local. We seek to identify with all believers in Christ.
We believe that God has appointed elders, in each church, to oversee His work.
We believe the essence of the Christian life is a personal relationship with Christ lived out in the fellowship of the church.
We believe the age will end with the return of Jesus Christ to set up His kingdom.
We observe the Lord's Supper and baptism as ordinances through which we express our faith in obedience to God.
We are committed to bringing the Gospel to our local community and to all the world.
We are committed to equipping the saints for the work of ministry that we might present each one mature in Christ.
Open Door began in 1972 when three seminary students decided to start a community for young believers who really wanted to live out the words of Jesus. What began as group of believers getting together for a weekly dinner, worship and Bible study, blossomed into a movement of discipleship houses and church plants throughout the SF Bay Area. As God blessed our movement, we went global with church plants and ministries in the UK, Mexico, the Philippines and beyond. It's amazing to see all that God has done since our humble beginnings.
Today, our church is experiencing a resurgence of the passion and values that kicked things off forty years ago. Our plan for the future is simple - to go into all the world, providing a loving atmosphere where people and cities are transformed by the presence of God. If you join us at one of our gatherings you will notice that His presence is central to everything we do. That's because we believe His presence is the only thing we truly need and the very thing our world needs most. You will also notice our passion for hospitality, a passion for God's Word, and a passion for reaching out to every strata of our culture.
Our story is probably a lot like yours. There have been highs and lows, but we're still growing because of God's faithfulness. Maybe you can help us write the next chapter.
